This lesson was taught to Kindergarten in Montgomery in order to show students the difference between letters, words, and sentences.  The Alphabet Tree by Leo Lionni was an excellent text for the lesson! Activity involved writing a sentence on a sentence strip and cutting the words apart.  This served as an excellent means of assessment too!

This writing mini lesson for the Trenton 2nd grade class was on Procedural writing in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.  After doing many themed read alouds of leprechauns, students were asked to make a leprechaun trap to try to ‘catch’ a leprechaun on St. Patrick’s Day.  Before constructing the traps, the students had to write a procedural plan for how they were going to design and make their traps.  They brainstormed a list of transition words and were asked to use them in their procedural writing. More pictures below!

The students have been learning about Speech Bubbles and how they can really spice up their illustrations! We have visited Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus and various other texts with speech bubbles.  This lesson uses Snowmen at Night by Carolyn Buehner to have the students create a snowman and a speech bubble for the snowman saying what he or she does at night.  Creative and cute for winter!

This lesson was based on the story Pancakes for Breakfast by Tomie dePaola.  I especially love this story because it only has pictures, no words!  I asked the students, "What do you notice about this story? Why is it different from other stories we have read? Do you think the author forgot to put in the words or do you think he did this on purpose?"  The students enjoyed making predictions and looking at picture clues.

Kindergarten students explored and wrote about things they are excited to do when they get bigger.  They seemed to really connect to this Little Critter Story, When I Get Bigger.

Guided Reading: Good Morning Monday (Level H)

I worked with a Guided Reading group that was the lowest group in the second grade class.  The group had 3 students that are English Language Learners.  I had the opportunity to work with them twice per week and was amazed at their improvement!  Teaching point notes are below!

This unit encompassed fairy tales, folk tales, legends, and fables.  The 2nd graders worked to identify key story elements of fairy tales and made comparisons between works that were read. Read alouds included: The Three Little Pigs, The Real Story of the Three Little Pigs by A. Wolf and John Scieska (one of my favorites!), Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Little Bunny Foo Foo.

For a mini lesson on Problem and Solution I did a Read Aloud of The Playground Problem.  The Playground Problem is centered on a “boys vs. girls” situation that states an obvious problem.  It started a good discussion about identifying the problem in a story as well as the solution(s) that result.  My teaching points notes are below!
